Based on our hospitable guest house in Gyftokampos we will hike under the northern slopes of Mount Tymfi to discover the well hidden gems of the area. Away from the busy paths we will refresh with the crystal clear water of Neraidovrisi and we will rest in the magical meadow of Katsanos sheepfold. Lake Arvanita will reveal its beauty and the river trekking in Rasenitis will be an unforgettable experience. With our local guide Akis, we will feel the authenticity of this rich in tradition place and we will taste the healthy and invigorating vegetarian dishes prepared by him and his mother!

Day 1: Reception and Museum of Sarakatsani Flock
Welcome to the guest house, small tour to the surrounding forest and visit to the open-air museum "Sarakatsaniki Stani".

Day 2: Vrysochori-Stani Katsanou
Departure with vehicles from the guest house to Vrysochori (13km). The hiking route starts through the village, moving through lush forests of black pine, beech and fir. It has continuous changes of soil and landscapes and passes through the location of Neraidovrisi, a point where crystal clear water gushes through the rocks. Our destination is the Stani of Katsanos, a magical meadow from which we will admire the northern slopes of Tymfi and Smolikas.Degree of difficulty: 3/5Distance-Estimated time: 14 km (D + 1000m) - 5 hours.

Day 3: River trekking
Departure in the morning with the vehicles for Laista (10 km). We leave the cars and descend from a forest road to the river, where the hiking on its banks will begin. During the route we will stop for a swim and admire the peaks of Mt. Smolikas and Tymfi.

Day 4: Lake Arvanita and Departure
Start form the guest house on foot for the imposing location of Lake Arvanita. Through paths and small roads we will get there to admire the huge slope below the Goura peak of Tymfi. We return from the same path.Degree of difficulty: EasyDistance-Estimated time: 11 km - 3 hours.In the afternoon we have the farewell and departure.
Where is the meeting point and when?The excursion starts and ends at the Free inn Zagori guest house in Gyftokampos. Transfer from Thessaloniki and return can be arranged at an additional cost.
What level of fitness is required?This trip is overall at a difficulty level of 3/5 and therefore requires a relatively good level of fitness so that you can hike for up to 5 hours in a day. The terrain does not present technical difficulties.
What equipment do we recommend?
  1. Backpack (20-30L).
  2. Hiking boots or running shoes with a rough outsole will be fine.
  3. A waterproof jacket for weather changes.
  4. A warm middle layer, long-sleeved blouse, fleece, etc.
  5. Long pants and also shorts if you prefer for hiking during the day.
  6. Sunscreen and hat.
  7. Hiking sticks

What is the best time to hike on Mount Tymfi?The best season is from May to November.The snow that accumulates during the winter months usually melts by the end of April and therefore the conditions become easier for hiking. August is the warmest month with temperatures even up to 30C is common even at higher altitudes. Do not forget that it is a mountain and the weather conditions can change quickly and you should also be prepared for a little rain during the summer months.
What about eating, sleeping and showering on our trip?Overnight stay and meals are done in the guest house and include breakfast and one vegetarian meal per day rich in nutrients. The guest house has 12 beds in 3 rooms (3,4,5 bed) each with its own bathroom and wc.Typical meals on offer are:Breakfast: toast, homemade jams, tahini, hazelnut praline and fruit, tea and coffeeVegetarian meal: Oven beans, pastitsio, soutzoukaki, chickpeas, baked spaghetti, fava beans, hummus, fresh salads.
